This is in response to your recent comment on my blog:

you asked "Do you think we as people are that great and powerful?"

and my answer is, we have always had the power when it came to the idea of god. The time in which the idea of a higher power was necessary has indeed past, and has been past for quite some time. Do I think that some people still need some belief, sure. But the quotes, for me, stands as a testament that Man (or Woman)'s ability to make rational and moral choices without the threat of a "god" has been vastly under appreciated. The moral code that we as humans is not something that is set down by the bible or by god, but rather the natural instincts of humanity which are brought about with higher cognitive abilities. I do not know where we came from and some people believe in creation, others in abiogenesis, but those are questions unanswered either by man or "god." I do not need to make up something illogical or irrational just to help myself sleep at night, nor to fear it in order to have a moral fortitude. If faith is all that keeps people from being immoral then those are people whom I cannot trust because faith is something not tangible and can be warped by anybody and everybody.

So to answer, we have never needed to be that powerful... we just needed to think and thus ideas and creativity and natural morality is alive and well.

I like your intellect.

One question....how do you define greatness?

Thank you,

How do I define Greatness? I suppose like most people do, go to the dictionary and look it up. Even there however, we loose understanding. Much like everything in life, perception is what matters the most. The old adage, one mans trash is another mans treasure speaks true here. If we are speaking of greatness in physical things, then it can mean size or amount. It can mean quality or quantity. There is no limit to ones definition of greatness, just as there is no limit to someones meaning of love.

But I digress, you asked me what my definition is, correct? My answer to that lies in what makes me the happiest. Those moments in which I will always remember, those that make me feel wonderful, amazing, and unique. My definition may be similar or completely different from yours, but in the end it is always the same. It is a personal revelation as to what we each think is great. Maybe I think that Linguine and White clam sauce is the definition of greatness in food. You may prefer a medium rare steak from a specific place. But in the end it is what is great to ourselves. Yet, I know your not talking about food, or movies or anything tangible. You are talking about the idea of greatness as it relates to people and god and other ideas. I think to answer you, we have to look at society in general. There is always a perception of right and wrong and with that there are those people who embody the attributes of being good and selfless (or sometimes even selfish) and those who embody the bad and thus as egocentric and care little of the world. This is where I believe most people would define greatness, in these areas. Those people who in our society who help and defend others at the risk of themselves, thus for the greater good over the individual would be said to be a definition of greatness. Yet we also see greatness in those who are selfish, such as Donald Trump, he may not be the greatest person per say, but he embodies the business man who to some is great thus appearing great to some. Then we have the latter of the moral spectrum, those who are seen as evil and such, but let say that we have a serial killer who has claimed the most lives out of anybody. A majority of society will see him as an immoral and evil person. Yet some will see him as the Greatest serial killer of all time. Again we have an idea of perception that is defined by each and every person no matter the context.

To go even further, I have talked about this before in saying that people need only change their perspective to see the opposing sides view point. This is why I am often the devils advocate in most debates. I can easily see both sides, even if I do not believe in one or the other.

So, in closing my idea of greatness is something that I define each and every day. That is what makes us human. I hope that answers your question thoroughly.

Johnny,

Your words continue to amaze me. Thank you for taking the time and sharing you thoughts.

I am a dictionary person also. I usually go there first in defining a word. Next, I see how I relate to it or connect to it. Eventually, I have a definition.

Greatness
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Greatness is a concept that is heavily dependent on a person's perspective and biases. The term can be used to emphasize a thing's superiority. In Europe the most lauded rulers were given the attribute "the Great" (e.g. Alfred the Great).

Lists can be assembled of great people, things, and places. They can be formulated by panels of experts, polls, or an individual. Such lists are rarely definitive since they are subject to the opinion of the assembler.

Greatest hits are collections of tracks released by music groups.

I believe greatness could be something or someone at their highest potential of good. We each have of our version since we each have our own perspective.

I know by my own definition, I have not achieved greatness. Have you?

When you look at yourself and you say that you have not achieved greatness you only say that because you seek that which everyone else seems to think you want or need. We are programmed as children to want certain things or to be a certain way. Sometimes we break free of these constraints other times we do not. Is this good or bad... I do not know. It depends solely on each person. I do not know why you think you have not achieved greatness but in my own experience... waking up and being able to have another day at life is an achievement of greatness in and of itself. See what you have and cherish it. Do not look at what you do not have or have not done and feel bad, rather look out and do that in which you wish to do. There are no obstacle but ourselves.

Have I achieved greatness... I do not know.. there are things I wish I would do or wish I had... but every time I think about it.. I realized I am the only one who can get those things, those dreams and turn them into reality. So when I truly think about it I do believe I have achieved greatness... I have found the woman I have always wanted and have started to become the man I have always truly been. I will someday be a father, whether naturally or by adoption, but I will help rear a child and bring him up to cherish everything he/she has. I have achieved greatness because I have found what I believe in and what I do not.. there are many people who do not know what they even think because they have always been told to think a certain way.

So sometimes I feel great and sometimes I don't.. thus is life.

Thank you for enjoying my words and commentary... I love to answer questions as I often find out more about myself as I answer others.
